A drill press holds the bit square to the work and feeds it down under lever control, so holes come out perpendicular, in the same place every time and to a consistent depth. That is difficult to achieve with a hand-held drill.

Workshops use one for repeat holes in flat bar and plate, dowel and hinge holes in timber, and any job where accuracy matters more than portability. Clamp the workpiece rather than holding it by hand, and choose a speed suited to the material and bit.
