A flap disc carries overlapping abrasive flaps around a backing plate, so it grinds and sands in one pass and wears back gradually to expose fresh abrasive instead of glazing over.

Fabricators use flap discs to dress welds, take off mill scale and rust, chamfer plate edges and blend repairs before painting. They leave a smoother surface than a solid grinding wheel, which makes them well suited to finishing work on steel and stainless. Fit the disc to an angle grinder of the matching size and keep it moving across the work.
