Flap discs earn their keep in fabrication shops because one disc takes a job from rough weld to a surface ready for paint. The abrasive flaps wear away steadily and keep presenting a fresh edge to the work.

They are used on mild steel, stainless and aluminium for grinding down welds, removing scale, easing sharp corners and cleaning up cut ends. Mount the disc squarely on the grinder, run it up to speed clear of the work, and use light sweeping strokes rather than heavy pressure. Eye and face protection are essential.
