What is the difference between roofing screws and roofing bolts?

A self-drilling roofing screw has a drill point and a hex head. Driven with a nut setter in a drill, it drills through the sheet and into a steel purlin and fastens in one step, so there is no separate drilling and no nut to hold. That makes it the faster choice on steel-framed roofs.

A roofing bolt goes through a hole drilled in the sheet and the support and is tightened with a nut from the other side. It needs access to both sides, and is used where a through-bolted fixing is wanted.

Do self-drilling screws work on timber purlins?

Self-drilling hex-head screws are designed for fixing to steel. For timber purlins and rafters, check which fixing the sheet maker specifies for timber before you buy.

Which length of roofing screw do you need?

The screw must pass through the sheet, and through the raised profile if you are fixing through the crest, and then go far enough into the purlin to hold. So the right length depends on the sheet profile, where on the profile you fix and the thickness of the purlin.

  • Shorter lengths (5.5 x 20mm and 25mm) suit fixing through the flat part of a sheet and flashings to thin steel.
  • Middle lengths (35mm to 50mm) suit fixing through low profiles and thicker steel.
  • Longer lengths (63mm and 75mm) suit fixing through the crest of deeper profiles or through extra layers such as insulation.

If you are not sure, test one screw on the actual sheet and purlin before you buy a full carton.

How many roofing screws do you need?

Follow the fixing pattern published by the maker of your roofing sheets. The number of fixings per sheet depends on the profile, the purlin spacing, the wind exposure of the site and whether the sheet is at the edge or ridge of the roof, so there is no single correct number. Once you have the pattern:

  • Count the fixings per sheet from the maker's pattern and multiply by the number of sheets.
  • Add the fixings for ridges, flashings and edges.
  • Divide by the number of screws per box (200, 150 or 80 depending on length) to get the boxes, then round up and allow a few spare.

Tools for fixing roofing screws

Drive hex-head screws with a Knicker magnetic nut setter socket 8 x 65mm in a drill; check it fits the screw head before you buy a carton. Cut sheets and flashings with an aviation snip or a heavy-duty tin cutter. Do not overtighten: stop once the head is snug, or you can dent the sheet.
