What welded mesh is used for

A 1 cm square is small enough to keep out rats and small birds, which makes this mesh a common choice for chick houses, rabbit hutches, bird cages and covers over drains and vents. Because it is rigid, it also makes trays, guards and partitions that keep their shape.

For insect screening over windows, use green gauze wire, which has a much finer mesh. For light fencing over a large area, use chicken wire.
