Track Lighting for Shops in Kenya: Rails, Heads, Beam Angles and What It Costs
Track lighting for a shop in Kenya is a rail fixed to the ceiling with spotlight heads clipped into it. The heads slide and turn, so the light follows the display. At our current prices a 2 m aluminium rail costs KSh 310 and a 30W COB track head costs from KSh 350, so a 4 m shopfront with six heads comes to about KSh 2,720 before wiring and labour. Choose the beam angle for the job, an 18° head to pick out one item and a 24° head for rails and shelves. Where colour matters, choose the CRI 85 head. Before you buy, confirm that the head's adaptor matches the rail.
How a track system works
The rail is a metal channel with conductors running along its length. It is fed with power at one end. Each head's adaptor clips into the channel and picks up power, so heads move without rewiring. The TL012M-2 rail is listed for second-line (two-wire) track lights. As general guidance, a two-wire rail is a single circuit, so all the heads on it switch on and off together. If you want the window and the back wall on separate switches, run separate rails.
Track heads do not all use the same adaptor. The TL012M-2 listing tells you to check that your heads use a matching two-wire adaptor, and none of our head listings state an adaptor type. Send us the model numbers on WhatsApp before you buy.
The rails: MD-TL09 or TL012M-2
| Rail | Lengths | Body and section | Finish | Price (piece) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MODI MD-TL09 | 1 m and 2 m | Aluminium and PC; 1000 x 32 x 15 mm (1 m), 2000 x 32 x 16 mm (2 m) | 1 m in white or black, 2 m in white | KSh 170 (1 m), KSh 310 (2 m) |
| MODI TL012M-2 | 2 m | Aluminium with copper conductors; 2000 x 33.5 x 15.7 mm | White | KSh 310 |
MD-TL09 comes in 1 m and 2 m sections, so you can make up a run without cutting, and its frosted baked varnish keeps the colour even between sections. It is the only rail here sold in black (1 m).
TL012M-2 is the metal-bodied rail, aluminium with copper conductors, which its listing recommends for long runs, heavy fittings or track low enough to be knocked. It costs the same as a 2 m MD-TL09.
By the carton, a 2 m rail of either model works out at KSh 279 a piece.
Beam angle: spotlight or shelf light
Beam angle is how wide the cone of light spreads. Narrow makes one item stand out; wider lights a rail or shelf evenly.
- 18°: MODI MD-TL4930. This is our tightest beam. The listing says it is for lifting a single item, a mannequin or a shelf out of the surrounding light, for example on jewellery and phone counters.
- 24°: MODI MD-TL4530, V.Max M-TL8230 and MODI MD-TL7430. This is the general display beam, narrow enough to light one clothing rail, shelf or counter.
As general guidance, most shops use mainly 24° heads and add one or two 18° heads for the window or the best-selling display. Using only narrow beams leaves dark patches between the pools of light.
Colour rendering: why CRI 85 matters for clothing and food
CRI (colour rendering index) tells you how true colours look under the light. The MD-TL4530 is quoted at CRI 85 or above, and its listing recommends it for clothing, artwork, food and cosmetics. The other three heads are quoted at CRI 80 or above. If customers judge your stock by its colour, choose the MD-TL4530. It is also the brightest head here, at 3,000 lumens, for KSh 350.
Glare and low ceilings
Under a low ceiling, customers look straight into the fittings. The MD-TL7430 has double-layer secondary anti-glare optics over its COB source, so it is more comfortable to look at: 2,500 lumens, 24°, KSh 350. As general guidance, aim heads at the display and away from the aisle.
Warm white or daylight
As general guidance, warm white (3000K) suits boutiques, furniture and food, while daylight (6500K) gives the crisper, whiter light that many phone, hardware and pharmacy counters prefer. Our listings are sold as follows:
- MD-TL4530: warm white.
- MD-TL7430: white body, warm white version.
- M-TL8230: 3000K warm or 6500K daylight, in a white or black body.
- MD-TL4930: 3000K warm or 6500K daylight in a black body, and 3000K warm in a white body.
As general guidance, keep one colour temperature along a run. Mixing warm and daylight heads on the same display looks patchy.
Head by head: beam, lumens and price
| Head | Beam | Lumens (30W) | CRI | Price (piece) | Carton |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MODI MD-TL4930 | 18° | 2,700 | 80+ | KSh 630 (black), KSh 490 (white) | KSh 17,010 / 30 (black), KSh 13,230 / 30 (white) |
| MODI MD-TL4530 | 24° | 3,000 | 85+ | KSh 350 | KSh 15,750 / 50 |
| MODI MD-TL7430 | 24° | 2,500 | 80+ | KSh 350 | KSh 12,600 / 40 |
| V.Max M-TL8230 | 24° | 2,500 | 80+ | KSh 490 | KSh 17,640 / 40 |
The three MODI heads list an operating range of AC175–265V and a rated life of 25,000 hours.
Worked costing: a 4 m shopfront with 6 heads
A 4 m shopfront, six heads on one switched circuit:
| Item | Qty | Each | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| MD-TL09 2 m rail, white (or TL012M-2) | 2 | KSh 310 | KSh 620 |
| MD-TL4530 24° CRI 85 head | 6 | KSh 350 | KSh 2,100 |
| Option A total | KSh 2,720 |
Option B, window accents: four MD-TL4530 (KSh 1,400), two black MD-TL4930 18° heads (KSh 1,260) and two rails (KSh 620) total KSh 3,280, or KSh 3,000 with white MD-TL4930s.
Option C, low ceiling: six MD-TL7430 anti-glare heads instead also total KSh 2,720, trading CRI 85 for anti-glare optics.
These figures cover rails and heads only. A run also needs a power feed, end caps and, where rails meet, a joiner; these are not listed on our site, so ask us what fits your rail. Allow for cable, a switch and labour, and as general guidance have a qualified electrician make the mains connection. For the rest of the shop, see panel lights vs downlights, and for counters and reception areas, pendant lights and chandeliers.

Common questions
How much does a track light rail cost in Kenya?
Our MODI MD-TL09 rail is KSh 170 for 1 m and KSh 310 for 2 m. The all-aluminium TL012M-2 with copper conductors is KSh 310 for 2 m. Carton prices bring a 2 m rail down to KSh 279 a piece.
Will any track light fit any rail?
No. Adaptors differ, and the TL012M-2 is listed for second-line (two-wire) heads only. Confirm with us before you buy, especially when adding to an existing installation.
Which track light is best for a clothing shop?
The MODI MD-TL4530, whose listing recommends it for clothing and which has our highest colour rendering (CRI 85 or above). Under a low ceiling, consider the MD-TL7430 anti-glare head.
Is a track panel light the same as a track spotlight?
No. Everything here is a spotlight head that clips into a rail. We do not list a panel that fits a track. For even general light, use a ceiling panel; see our panel lights vs downlights guide.
