Extension sockets: how to choose a safe extension cable for home and office

To choose a safe extension socket, match it to the job: a plug-in three-way adaptor where you only need more outlets at the wall, a corded extension where the appliances are a few metres away, and a cable reel for long runs on site. Then check the rating. Every MODI adaptor and extension we stock is rated 13A at 250V, and the corded MD-HWA9030 and MD-HWA9040 are rated 3,250W maximum for all outlets combined, not per outlet. Prices run from KSh 170 for a basic fused adaptor to KSh 7,000 for a 50 m cable reel.

Plug-in adaptors

An adaptor plugs straight into the wall with no cable, so there is nothing to trip over. The MD-HWA5003 and MD-HWA5004P are the everyday KSh 170 options; both have a 13A fuse and safety shutters over the socket holes, which matters in homes with small children, and the 5003 adds a switch with an indicator light. The MD-HWA6030 takes both UK square-pin and round two-pin plugs, useful when imported appliances arrive with mixed plugs. The MD-HWA6030U adds a USB port (5V, 2.1A) so a phone charges without using up a mains outlet.

Corded extensions

When the TV stand, desk or workbench is away from the wall, use a corded extension. The MD-HWA9030 (three-way) and MD-HWA9040 (four-way) share the same build: 3 m of 3-core 1.25 mm PVC cable, a BS 1363 plug, ABS housing and copper contacts. MODI also makes both in a 5 m length; ask us about stock.

Cable reels

The MD-HWW1006 carries 50 m of 3 x 2.5 mm rubber-sheathed cable with three 13A sockets on the drum, for building sites, workshops, events and generator runs. MODI's own instruction is to unwind the drum fully before drawing a heavy load: a coiled cable carrying current can overheat.

How to use an extension safely

These are general good practice, not a substitute for a qualified electrician on a new installation.

  • Add up the load. The 3,250W on the MD-HWA9030 and MD-HWA9040 is the ceiling for everything plugged in together. A TV, decoder, router and phone charger together use only a small part of it. Anything with a heating element, such as a kettle, iron, heater or hot plate, can use most of it alone, so count those carefully and avoid running two at once from one extension.
  • Do not daisy-chain. Plugging one adaptor or extension into another stacks the load onto one wall socket. MODI's own notes advise against chaining adaptors together.
  • Keep the fuse. The UK-type plugs on these adaptors are fused. If a fuse blows, replace it with the correct rating and find out why before plugging back in.
  • Check for heat and damage. A plug or block that feels hot, smells of burning, or has a cracked case or cut cable should be taken out of use.
  • Not a permanent fix. If a room needs an extension every day, adding wall sockets is the better long-term answer. Our guide to choosing sockets and switches for each room covers 13A, 25A and 45A points.

Common questions

How many appliances can I plug into a 4-way extension?

As many as fit, as long as the total stays within 13A / 3,250W. Four low-power devices are fine; two heating appliances may not be.

Can I run a fridge or a microwave on an extension?

Ideally, large appliances go straight into a wall socket. If you must use an extension, use a corded one rated for the load, keep it uncoiled and plug nothing else heavy into it.

Which adaptor takes round-pin plugs?

The MD-HWA6030 and MD-HWA6030U have universal outlets for UK square pins and round two-pin plugs.

Do you supply hardware shops?

Yes. Every model has a carton price (shown above), and shops can request a trade quote on our trade page.
